Student rewarded for excellency
  For the first time, the Lebanese Association for the Development of Tourism and Hospitality Training has granted an annual prize, the Nouhad Dammous Excellency Award, to Lebanon’s top hospitality student selected from fifteen universities and ten institutions.
This year’s USD 5,000 prize went to Maher Aoun from the faculty of Hospitality Management at Sagesse University. The results were announced during the Horeca
2010 Gala Dinner held at Le Royal Beirut on April the 28th. The decision for the selection of the best student
was based on the following criteria:
- Recommendation from the dean of the student’s institute
or university
- Current level of education
- Achievement of practical training certificates
- Conduct with colleagues, supervisors and customers
- Attitude towards the importance of continuous training
and study after graduation.


   
  Said Sawalh, president of the Jordanian international association Golden Helmsmen of Tourism, honored Nouhad Dammous, editor in chief, Hospitality News Middle East, with a trophy and certificate of merit during an annual ceremony at Regency Palace Hotel, Amman. The distribution of the travel and tourism expert awards took place under the patronage of Nader Al-Dahabi, the club’s first president (1996 – 2000) and its founder Faiq Bisharat.


The participants of HORECA 2010 11th Hospitality Salon Culinaire were briefed on competition rules and procedures. The BIEL conference hall, Beirut, was abuzz with budding chefs from local universities, as well as leading, regional and international chefs including some of the industry’s renowned players and sponsors. Hospitality Services and ADFTH organized the event. .


The Horeca 2010 Exhibitors’ Gathering took place at the Hazmieh Rotana Hotel. The exhibitors were treated to a workshop with Samir Zehil, Widner Coaches, on “Be heard, be seen: How to increase your visibility during exhibitions”. Then they were given logistical and technical details about their participation and their participant packs. .


Taking part in the celebration of the First Doha Food Festival 2010, Sheraton Doha Resort and Convention Hotel participated by offering a sice of life and food from one of its outlets, the La Veranda Italian Restaurant.

Sawsan Wazzan-Jabri held a seminar entitled Menopause and Diet as part of the series of seminars and workshops that are taking place in the newly inaugurated multidisciplinary seminar room at the first floor of the Nutrition and Diet Center building near Verdun.

Elie Salem, Balamand’s university’s president, led the inauguration of the food production demo lab supported by donor and former trustee Albert Matta. It took place at the School of Tourism and Hotel Management at the University of Balamand.

Gefinor Rotana Beirut, the first hotel to implement HACCP system in Lebanon in 2009, welcomed Rotana members from Hazmieh Rotana and Raouché Arjaan by Rotana to attend a Food Safety and HACCP Implementation training session conducted by Bureau Veritas

Burger King is back and with a whole new look. Burger King family, lovers and media gathered to celebrate the Burger King re-opening of the Jal El Dib branch. Everyone was treated a to Whopper burger, and entertained by fireworks after a giant cake was cut.

Khaled Ahmad Taki, head of Franchise Business Consultants Office and Franchise Training Institute, revealed a project as a partial solution to the traffic crisis in Lebanon: the establishment of a Lebanese company to transport passengers by sea, a type of water taxi.

Rotana Hotels Lebanon, NoBrand owner Badeeh Abla of Beirutrestaurants.com and ilili restaurant NYC owner and executive chef Philippe Massoud joined forces to encourage restaurant owners to raise funds for Haitian relief efforts. The launch took place in Bella Vita Café at Raouché Arjaan by Rotana.


The Radisson Blu Hotel Dubai Deira Creek’s Iranian restaurant Shabestan celebrated Iranian New Year, better known as Novrooz, to mark the coming of spring.

For the second year in a row, Le Commodore Hotel Beirut organized a reforestation day as part of the national campaign for the reforestation of Lebanon. The hotel’s management and staff planted pine trees in Ramliyeh, Mount Lebanon.

La Bodeguita del Medio, a Cuban restaurant and cigar lounge, held a reception to mark the opening of its first venue in Beirut. Lebanon’s minister of tourism Fady Abboud and the Cuban Ambassador Manuel Serrano Acosta were amongst the guests treated to flavors of Old Havana.

A friendship football match that ended in a 1-1 draw took place between the Russian and Palestinian national teams. Both teams attended an official dinner and spent the night at the InterContinental Jericho Hotel.

Information City hosted its fourth annual sponsors gala dinner, the Dubai Knights ceremony, at Mina Al Salam Hotel under the patronage of Sheikh Mohamed bin Maktoum bin Juma Al Maktoum, chairman and executive director, Information City Publishing, Conference and Exhibitions Management.

For celebrate Austrian week Austrian chefs Valentin Siglreithmaier and Manuel Krueckl transformed the InterContinental Phoenicia Beirut’s Mosaic restaurant into a miniature Vienna highlighting the country’s folklore, traditions, costumes, and most importantly cuisine.

For the third time Le Royal Hotel Beirut’s Titanic Piano Bar was host to a professional cigar roller from Cuba, who rolled, distributed, and gave an insight into the history of cigars.

A martini cocktail reception held at Bar ThreeSixty, the lounge bar of Le Gray Hotel overlooking Downtown Beirut. The reception was the first in a series aimed at introducing the venue and thanking faithful clients and friends.

The Millennium Hotel Abu Dhabi’s staff and management, headed by Moine Kandil, the hotel’s general manager, participated in the 15th anniversary of Abu Dhabi’s Terry Fox Run alongside around 16,000 participants.

The Mövenpick Resort Tala Bay Aqaba, Jordan, hosted the annual Mövenpick Business Academy. The conference invited a total of 85 personnel from the various Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts across the world.

Jurgen Baumhoff, general manager, Semiramis InterContinental, Egypt, announced the second year of the Cairo Jazz Festival, which will host representation from eight countries this year, including the USA, Holland, Austria, Japan, Lebanon and Egypt.

The Beirut Association for Social Development and the Social Solidarity Society opened its fourth consecutive Les Createurs Libanais Exhibition under the patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Ghida Talal at the InterContinental Amman, Jordan.
