The “2009 Bocuse D’ Or World Cuisine Contest”, 14-16 April 08

More than 25 Lebanese chefs are going to participate at the National Selections for the for the “2009 Bocuse D’ Or World Cuisine Contest”, the “2009 World Pastry Cup” and the “2009 World Bread Contest” from April 14 till 16, 2008 at the Institut de Gestion des Entreprises (IGE), USJ Mar Roukoz Campus. The selected team of the “2009 Bocuse D’ Or World Cuisine Contest”will represent Lebanon in Shanghai on May 2008 and the selected teams of the the “2009 World Pastry Cup” and the “2009 World Bread Contest” will represent Lebanon in January 2009 at SIRHA-Lyon.

Hospitality heyday . Industry participates in Beirut Marathon

Lebanon experienced its first Hospitality Relay Race (HRR) on November 18, attracting tens of aficionados who ran to keep the industry’s flame burning. Lebanon’s Hospitality Services s.a.r.l. and Beirut International Marathon jointly brought the 10K race to fruition, which was sponsored by food giant Nestle. Teams of four runners from hotels, restaurants, nightclubs, pubs, and hotel management schools raced for 10 km each. Some 22 groups were not afraid of sweating for Lebanon’s hospitality sector. InterContinental Phoenicia Hotel, Beirut snapped the first prize, while Schtroumpf Restaurant and Edde Sands beach resort came in second and third respectively.
“Everyone fights for what he/she believes in. We believe in this industry and deem this race an opportunity to bolster it. Players in the industry have shown an incredible strength and resilience,” said Hospitality Services s.a.r.l. Managing Director Joumana Salamé commented.

Solidere winks at the world

Lebanon's Solidere has rolled out Solidere International, based in Dubai International Financial Center (DIFC) in Dubai, with a share capital of $700.05 million. Solidere's equity percentage is 37.2 percent. The newly founded company "is set to bring in new investors and strategic partners," according to Solidere management. The aim is to "undertake different real estate activities all over the world, with a special focus on the Middle East region, the Mediterranean countries and North Africa."
The company has already partnered with the Government of Ajman to set up a large residential and business complex near the Dubai Airport on a 12 million square-meter lot. Furthermore, Solidere International is in the process of developing two urban projects in Egypt, the first in western Cairo, on a 1.2 million square-meter swathe of land, and the other in eastern Cairo, covering 850,000 square meters. Turkey and Saudi Arabia should also be getting a slice of the action. Meanwhile, the local Solidere said it is not taking its business abroad, against the backdrop of Lebanon's instability. In addition to the Beirut Central District projects, there are some 50 private investor development projects in Lebanon underway, such as the Platinum Towers, Beirut Towers, Four Seasons Hotel, said Nabil Rached, Solidere press relations officer.

Professional Culinary Arts Exhibits Workshop Improves Culinary Skills of Jordanian Chefs

Jordan’s Events Unlimited and Lebanon’s Hospitality Services, organizers of the annual International Hospitality Forum, held a Professional Culinary Arts Exhibits Workshop in Amman on the 16th and 17th of June 2007 at the College of Hospitality and Tourism of the Jordan Applied University. The International Hospitality Forum will be held at the Amman Exhibition Park from 30 October to 1 November 2007.
The Professional Culinary Arts Exhibits Workshop was sponsored by Nabil Company for Food Products, a leading manufacturer of high quality chilled and frozen food products and pastries and conducted by Chef Markus Iten, President of the Egyptian Chefs Association and the Continental Director, Middle East & Africa, of the World Association of Cooks Societies (WACS).
The 2-day intensive workshop covered many areas including the importance and reasons for participating in culinary arts competitions; The Workshop provided theoretical as well as hands on training where chefs learnt new techniques and watched several slides and videos.
Participating chefs came from various hotels and restaurants in Jordan in addition to chefs from the Jordan Applied University.

Swiss-Belhotel International General Managers’ Conference in Jakarta focuses on “Passion & Professionalism”

Swiss-Belhotel International recently held its ’2006 General Managers’ Conference at the Hotel Ciptura Jakarta which has been managed by Swiss-Belhotel International for almost 10 years.
The conference, led by Mr Gavin M. Faull, President of Swiss-Belhotel International, focused on ‘Passion & Professionalism” a critical element to the service and management philosophy of Swiss-Belhotel International. There were more than 35 participants including hotel general managers and senior corporate executives of the Swiss-Belhotel International Group.
According to Faull, the conference reviewed the Group’s projects and developments as well as its future focus on China and the Middle East. Swiss-Belhotel International is going through a rapid development phase which will see the Group in the top 100 international hotel management company’s by 2009.
The conference programme included sessions, lead by outside presenters on topics such as revenue management systems, brand development and brand management. Swiss-Belhotel International is being recognized as a strong international hotel management brand. 2007 will see expansion in China and The Middle East, the two focus areas for Swiss-Belhotel International.
Swiss-Belhotel international has a strategic association with international hotel management schools in Switzerland, Australia, China and New Zealand through Orion Hotel Schools. The Chairman of Orion Hotel Schools Mr. Fritz Gubler gave a presentation on Orion Schools. Education and training initiatives of Swiss-Belhotel International were introduced at the conference as being critical to the Group to meet the challenges of staff development and training in its 20 operations and projects as well as future expansion.
The Senior Vice President Mr. James Tam, the Vice Presidents of Vietnam, Indonesia and The Middle East, Mr. G. Michael Bischof (Vietnam) Mr. Emmanuel Guillard (Indonesia) and Mr. Edgar Solenthaler (The Middle East) presented Swiss-Belhotel International’s projects and developments in their particular regions.
General Managers who outstandingly contributed to their operations, and Swiss-Belhotel International were officially recognized. For 2004 the “General Manager of the Year” was awarded to Ms. Gloria C. Llamas, General Manager of Swiss-Belhotel Changchun, China and for 2005 the award went to Mr. Alfred Reyes, General Manager of The Linden Suites, Manila, The Philippines.
Swiss-Belhotel International’s President, Gavin Faull was excited with the very positive conference which was the largest and most successful conference in the Group’s 20 year history.
