Maher Bahsoun, general manager of Crowne Plaza Resort Salalah, leads with purpose, empowers with passion and inspires growth while driving excellence. For him, Oman’s hospitality industry presents a unique opportunity to combine cultural authenticity, service excellence and impactful contributions to the nation’s development. We learn more about him and how he anticipates the market will develop.

In your opinion, what makes working in Oman’s hospitality industry special?

The thing that makes hospitality in Oman truly special is the country’s soul. It has a vibrant culture, warm people and breathtaking natural landscapes combined. Moreover, it’s a place where hospitality goes beyond mere service, becoming instead a deeply rooted and heartfelt cultural tradition.

At Crowne Plaza Resort Salalah, we don’t simply provide rooms; instead, we create meaningful experiences, lasting memories and authentic stories daily. Consequently, each guest is warmly treated like family, reflecting the genuine Omani tradition of welcoming others with kindness and sincere generosity. Personally, what excites me most each day is enhancing this heartfelt hospitality by blending it with modern service excellence effectively. In addition, with Oman’s tourism sector evolving rapidly, we now face a tremendous opportunity to innovate and make a meaningful impact. As the country steadily rises as a premier destination, it remains focused on authenticity, sustainability, and the Omani people’s unique spirit. Altogether, this fusion of heritage, natural beauty and sincere service makes Oman a truly unforgettable place to visit and explore. Therefore, for us in the hospitality industry, it’s an absolute privilege to contribute to Oman’s inspiring and evolving tourism journey today.

How do you support local talent within your team?

Developing local talent is something I’m genuinely passionate about; more importantly, it’s not just a goal, it’s part of our DNA. I dedicate significant time to mentoring and working closely with my team to identify potential and actively nurture it. To support that, we offer structured development plans, promote cross-training opportunities and consistently celebrate achievements. Ultimately, it’s about fostering an environment where individuals feel safe to grow, make mistakes, learn and confidently step into leadership. Aligned with the Omanization program, I actively support impactful initiatives such as Omran’s Leadership Development Academy. Moreover, IHG Future Leaders and the IHG Academy both play essential roles in accelerating Omani talent into managerial and leadership roles. In addition, I firmly believe in empowering people by equipping them with confidence, knowledge, and practical tools to embrace leadership responsibilities. Indeed, when I witness someone begin as a trainee and eventually step into leadership, it’s incredibly fulfilling.

What qualities do you look for when hiring young hospitality professionals in Oman?

For me, it starts with attitude. We look for individuals who are passionate, eager to learn, and genuinely enjoy connecting with others. Notably, skills can be taught, but you can’t teach someone to care. Furthermore, I value emotional intelligence, cultural pride and creativity that drives someone to think differently. Hospitality is a people business. It’s a dynamic, fast-paced environment full of opportunities for those who are willing to put their heart into it. Moreover, I’m always excited to bring on young professionals who are ready to grow and take ownership of their journey. Afterall, they’re not just joining a team, they’re building the future of hospitality in Oman.

What’s your message to Omani youth who want to join the hotel industry?

To the youth of Oman, the hotel industry offers more than a career; it’s a stage for showcasing passion and culture. Moreover, as the world increasingly turns its gaze toward Oman, your authenticity stands out.

Therefore, dream big. The hospitality industry holds limitless opportunities. In addition, always embrace curiosity and continue learning, as personal development remains the foundation of long-term success and growth. With ongoing dedication and a firm commitment to self-improvement, you’ll discover that in hospitality, truly, the sky is the limit. Oman needs your unique energy, and this industry offers a global platform to create meaningful, lasting impact beyond borders.

What are your plans for the future?

Looking ahead, we’re focused on transforming Crowne Plaza Resort Salalah into a regional benchmark for modern, sustainable hospitality excellence. Furthermore, we’re expanding our wellness and lifestyle offerings, enhancing digital innovation and embedding eco-friendly practices into daily operations and guest experiences. However, what excites me most is developing a strong pipeline of future Omani leaders committed to excellence in hospitality. Therefore, I’m committed to mentoring, supporting professional growth and nurturing a workplace culture where local talent is encouraged to thrive.

On a personal level, I envision evolving into a transformational leader impacting not just one property but Oman’s broader tourism narrative. Ultimately, it’s about leaving a legacy rooted in people-first values, driven by purpose and committed to long-term, sustainable progress throughout Oman.
