Marriott International announced an agreement to acquire citizenM, further supporting its strategic growth in innovative lifestyle lodging offerings worldwide.
As a result, the transaction is expected to accelerate Marriott’s global expansion in the select-service and lifestyle segments with fresh momentum. Currently, citizenM operates 36 open hotels with 8,544 rooms across over 20 cities, including hubs like New York, London and Rome. In addition, its development pipeline includes three under-construction hotels with over 600 rooms expected to open by mid-2026.
Looking ahead, Marriott anticipates significant future growth for citizenM across its global regions throughout the next ten years. Notably, citizenM stands out for offering genuine service, tech-forward experiences, efficient design and a bold focus on art and aesthetics.
Since its founding in 2008, citizenM has targeted travelers seeking smart design, communal spaces and innovative, tech-driven accommodations. Features include creative meeting rooms, immersive art, grab-and-go dining, cozy lounges and rooftop decks that encourage social connection and collaboration.
“CitizenM was created for frequent travelers, and Marriott’s distribution capabilities will allow us to welcome new modern guests. With the strength of Marriott’s development engine, we look forward to the prospect of many additional citizenM properties in new destinations around the world. We will continue to own our real estate and operate all our hotels. This relationship will allow us to work together to maximize returns,” said Lennert de Jong, CEO of citizenM.
“We are very excited about our agreement with Marriott and look forward to this pivotal next step for our future growth. I envisage this relationship will greatly enhance citizenM’s global reach and brand impact. Marriott as an organization shares our values and culture,” said Rattan Chadha, founder and chairman of citizenM.
Upon closing, Marriott will pay USD 355 million to acquire the citizenM brand and related intellectual property from the current owner. Following the deal, citizenM hotels will enter Marriott’s system under long-term franchise agreements, preserving ownership with the seller.
Moreover, stabilized annual fees are projected around $30 million, with earn-outs up to USD 110 million based on future growth.
