HANU’s Melanie Tuy explains why whisky is masterful

whisky

Once viewed as a man’s drink, whisky is undergoing a transformation. Melanie Tuy, HANU’s bar manager, uncovers the new rules, one dram, one story and one pour at a time.

Whisky trends

There’s a growing appreciation for diverse expressions including cask finishes, high-proof bottlings and notably Asian whiskies like Japanese and Korean styles. Additionally, we are witnessing a strong increase in women enjoying whisky, challenging the outdated belief that it is a man’s drink. Consequently, this old mindset is shifting rapidly as more people embrace whisky’s rich complexity and cultural inclusiveness worldwide today. At HANU, we craft whisky-based cocktails that showcase the spirit’s versatility and invite exploration of complexity.

New whisky expressions

It’s all about approachability. We begin by asking guests about their taste preferences, like smoky, fruity, spicy or something else entirely. From there, we guide them thoughtfully, tailoring each recommendation to suit their palate and comfort level with whisky’s diverse profiles. Especially for women and first-time drinkers, avoid technical jargon and focus on simple, engaging and relatable flavor storytelling.

Moreover, our whisky cocktails and intentional pairings gently introduce complexity, transforming any intimidation into an enjoyable and immersive sensory experience.

Whisky-based cocktails

Whisky cocktails are essential in breaking barriers, especially for those who once believed whisky was too strong or simply not for them.  As a result, drinks like the whisky sour, Korean-inspired old fashioned or a bright highball showcase whisky’s versatility and charm. These approachable cocktails resonate widely with women, helping reshape perceptions and expand whisky’s appeal to a broader and more diverse audience. Ultimately, they redefine whisky culture as inclusive, creative and far beyond the outdated masculine image once associated with the spirit.

Whisky menus

We design our menu to appeal widely, offering approachable entry-level whiskies alongside rare, aged or limited-edition collector’s bottles with care. Furthermore, we ensure the menu feels welcoming, not intimidating, by keeping it clear, categorized and easy to explore without pressure or pretense. At HANU, we believe whisky belongs to everyone, regardless of background, experience level or familiarity with the spirit’s deeper nuances. Therefore, we create space for both deep expertise and open curiosity, encouraging guests to learn, taste, and enjoy at their pace.
