Lisandra Cotrina Mestre, a proud Cuban and certified cigar sommelier, is bringing refined cigar culture to the forefront of luxury hospitality. We spoke with Lisandra about the art of cigar service, the role of storytelling in hospitality and why cigars remain a timeless symbol of elegance.
What does a cigar sommelier do?
A cigar sommelier helps guests choose the perfect cigar for their taste and the occasion, enhancing their overall experience significantly. This role is not about selling a product; rather, it is about curating an experience through guidance, presentation and storytelling. Moreover, the ritual of cutting, lighting and sharing the unique story behind each cigar makes the guest feel special and luxurious.
I’ve had the chance to share the culture of Habanos with people from all over the world, consequently guiding them. Through flavors, traditions and pairings, I create unforgettable moments, and for me, it’s not just about cigars but about stories. Therefore, memories and the art of enjoying life are inseparable from the passion I bring to every guest interaction.
Furthermore, being a cigar sommelier at Sunset Hospitality has been a journey fueled by passion, connection and meaningful engagement with guests. The sophisticated yet welcoming ambiance of Sunset Hospitality Group’s venues creates an ideal setting for savoring cigars, which enhances the experience further.
As a result, every detail in the venues contributes to the moment, so as a sommelier, I rely on atmosphere and timing.
How do you pair cigars with drinks?
I focus on balance when pairing cigars with drinks, so strong cigars pair well with bold drinks like smoky whiskey. Medium-bodied cigars complement aged rum perfectly and cocktails such as an old-fashioned suit full-bodied cigars exceptionally well. Meanwhile, lighter drinks like a mojito instead match milder cigars, ensuring that neither the cigar nor the drink overpowers the other.
What trends are shaping the cigar industry?
Cigars are increasingly seen as part of a luxury lifestyle rather than a daily habit, a trend which continues to grow steadily. Furthermore, limited editions, curated pairing experiences and upscale cigar lounges are gaining popularity, consequently appealing to a more refined clientele.
In Dubai, the emphasis is on exclusivity, ambiance and integrating cigars into high-end social culture, enhancing luxury experiences for guests. Moreover, there is growing interest from younger audiences and more women are enjoying cigars across the region today.
How do cigars reflect culture and personal style?
Cigars carry history and tradition, deeply rooted in countries like Cuba, symbolizing culture through ritual, craftsmanship and shared experiences. Moreover, in today’s luxury world, smoking a cigar is a ritual, a way to celebrate or unwind and enjoy meaningful moments.
Finally, the cigar someone chooses often reflects their personality, style and appreciation for fine craftsmanship, highlighting individuality and personal expression.
