Regenerative tourism trends reshape global travel behavior

regenerative tourism

Regenerative tourism trends are gaining traction as travelers increasingly look for experiences that support local communities, protect ecosystems and create meaningful connections with destinations.

According to the Trends for 2026: The Transformation Economy report published by VisitScotland, travelers are becoming more aware of tourism’s environmental and social impacts and are seeking more responsible ways to travel. The report explains that tourism is moving beyond traditional sustainability toward intentional travel experiences that benefit both visitors and host communities.

Demand for responsible tourism

Environmental awareness, climate concerns and overtourism are among the trends shaping travel decisions. Furthermore, travelers are actively seeking responsible tourism and sustainable travel experiences but also want to see clear evidence that their trips positively impact destinations.  Moreover, they care about the environment, but sustainability now goes beyond green; it’s about supporting local communities and economies. Consequently, this shift reflects the principles of regenerative tourism, where travel contributes to restoring ecosystems and strengthening local economies.

Travelers want tourism that benefits communities

Consumer research highlighted in the report demonstrates the scale of this shift toward regenerative tourism.
• 73 percent of travelers want their spending to benefit local communities
• 60 percent want travel experiences that positively impact destinations
• 69 percent say they want to leave places better than they found them

These findings show how regenerative tourism trends are increasingly influencing travel expectations and decision-making.

From the experience economy to the transformation economy

Moreover, the report highlights how tourism is evolving from the experience economy into what it calls the transformation economy. Travelers are no longer looking only for leisure or entertainment. Instead, they seek experiences that support personal development, cultural connection and social impact. In this way, the transformation aligns closely with regenerative tourism principles, which focus on creating lasting value for destinations and communities.

Embracing regenerative tourism opportunities

As regenerative tourism trends accelerate, destinations and tourism businesses have an opportunity to reposition their offerings around responsible travel and community engagement. Accordingly, providers should clearly communicate how their experiences support local economies, protect natural environments and contribute to destination wellbeing. Doing so will help destinations attract travelers who increasingly want their journeys to create positive change for both people and places.
