As travel patterns shift, Oman’s hotel sector stands apart, says Jad Germanos of Crowne Plaza Muscat Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre (OCEC), pointing to authenticity, steady growth and changing guest expectations.
What makes Oman’s hotel sector unique?
What makes Oman truly special is how authentic it feels, since it continues to preserve its identity. Tellingly, this is something that guests genuinely notice. Moreover, visitors are not checking into a hotel, but stepping into a destination offering mountains, desert and coastline nearby. Tourism is still developing compared to regional markets, which gives Oman a fresh, less commercialized atmosphere that travelers appreciate. Furthermore, Oman Vision 2040 positions hospitality as an economic pillar that attracts investment, drives tourism growth and creates employment opportunities. Key projects under Oman Vision 2040 include Madinat Al Irfan infrastructure expansion by government. Significantly, its location is within the same area, making the development relevant to us. Therefore, we’re closely following its sustainable future growth path. As hoteliers, we are not selling rooms, we are telling Oman’s story in ways that feel real and memorable.
What impacts Oman’s hotel sector?
Oman’s hotel sector remains closely linked to global travel trends and regional dynamics, reflecting broader shifts across international tourism demand. Beyond this, air connectivity acts as a key driver, as expanding routes directly stimulate demand and increase accessibility for business and leisure travelers. In Muscat, large-scale events at Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre significantly influence performance, often driving notable spikes in occupancy and ADR. Furthermore, seasonality continues to shape patterns. For example, stronger performances typically occur during cooler months when visitor conditions are more favorable. On the numbers side, the sector has shown steady recovery, with occupancy and rates improving consistently year on year. However, performance remains subject to external factors such as global economic conditions and increasing regional competition. These continue to influence the overall growth trajectory.
What trends are shaping Oman’s hospitality landscape?
Several trends are clearly shaping the market direction, reflecting evolving guest expectations and broader industry shifts across the hospitality sector in Oman. Crucially, sustainability is becoming a decisive factor, particularly for corporate and international travelers who increasingly prioritize environmentally responsible hotel practices. Hotels investing in energy efficiency can reduce operating costs by around 5 to 10 percent, while supporting stronger long-term value. Furthermore, the MICE segment is growing steadily, positioning Muscat as an emerging regional hub for business events and large-scale gatherings. Guests seek personalized and local experiences, favoring authentic cultural connections over standardized offerings across their overall stay experience. Food and beverage has gained prominence, with many hotels generating up to 40 to 50 percent of total revenue. This shift confirms food and beverage is no longer secondary, but instead a central pillar driving profitability and guest engagement.
