Oman is positioning Muscat as a future tourism and lifestyle hub through an ambitious long term urban transformation strategy.
The Greater Muscat Master Plan outlines Oman’s urban vision for Muscat and nearby areas through 2040. The strategy aims transforming Muscat into a connected, green and tourism driven metropolitan destination. Additionally, the plan focuses on economic growth, improved transport networks, expanded public spaces and sustainable urban development. Moreover, the masterplan prioritizes compact urban districts, stronger community identities and better public services across the growing city.
Oman’s Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning highlighted the importance of coastlines, wadis, historical districts and green corridors in shaping Muscat’s tourism appeal. Furthermore, the strategy introduces economic clusters supporting tourism, hospitality, innovation, logistics, and food industries across multiple locations in Oman.
Tourism focused districts will also expand around Muscat, Muttrah, Al Khoudh, and the airport area to attract visitors and investment.
Several flagship developments form part of the masterplan, including Sultan Haitham City, Airport City, Muscat Resorts Conglomerate, Al Fahal Eco Village, City Beach and the Green Lung project in Barka.
The Greater Muscat Master Plan joined the Innovation Club of Global Business Districts. It became the first Middle Eastern project joining the internationally recognized network of global urban destinations.
