Saudi Arabia accelerates religious tourism through pilgrim growth

Saudi Arabia accelerates religious tourism growth by increasing pilgrim arrivals while expanding transport infrastructure to support capacity, connectivity and economic diversification goals.

Rising global pilgrim demand

Saudi Arabia welcomes expanding international pilgrim groups to Makkah and Madinah, signaling stronger global religious tourism demand. Importantly, this surge reflects growing interest across Asia and other regions. Thus, it reinforces the kingdom’s status as a leading destination for spiritual travel. This growth aligns with Vision 2030, positioning tourism as a strategic pillar supporting long-term economic diversification beyond oil revenues. Religious tourism attracts millions of visitors, thereby generating billions annually. As a result, it strengthens hospitality performance and contributes significantly to national economic development.

Year-round pilgrimage flows

Hajj creates peak seasonal demand, while Umrah ensures continuous year-round visitor flows, sustaining tourism activity across different periods. Therefore, this dual pilgrimage structure supports airline demand, hotel occupancy and broader tourism spending across Saudi Arabia’s expanding travel ecosystem.

Infrastructure and rail expansion

Saudi Arabia continues investing in infrastructure, including expansion of the Haramain High Speed Railway connecting key pilgrimage destinations efficiently. Furthermore, the railway enhances mobility between Makkah and Madinah, increasing seat capacity while reducing travel time and improving overall pilgrim experience.

Improving accessibility and connectivity

Upgraded airports, stronger air routes and expanded e-visa systems have improved international accessibility, particularly for high-growth markets across Asia. As a result, these developments reduce logistical barriers, enabling more pilgrims to travel efficiently while supporting scalable tourism growth across multiple regions.

Managing growth and experience

However, rising visitor volumes require careful planning, prompting authorities to implement advanced crowd management systems and stricter safety measures consistently. Saudi Arabia positions pilgrimage as both a spiritual journey and a powerful tourism engine, driving sustainable growth and strengthening global connectivity.

Strong Umrah growth reinforces tourism momentum

Official data from the General Authority for Statistics shows Umrah performers reached 15,222,497 during the first quarter of 2025. Moreover, international pilgrims totaled 6,523,630, reflecting a 10.7 percent increase. Meanwhile, domestic pilgrims reached 8,698,867, highlighting sustained local participation. Air travel dominated arrivals at 82.2 percent, demonstrating the importance of aviation connectivity in supporting religious tourism expansion. Visits to Madinah reached 6,452,696, including over 4 million international visitors, reinforcing the city’s role within pilgrimage itineraries. Therefore, these figures confirm strong demand momentum, positioning Umrah as a key driver of continuous tourism growth beyond peak pilgrimage seasons.
