Nestle: An ongoing coffee innovation and craftsmanship

“We unlock the power of food to enhance quality of life for everyone, today and for generations to come”, is Nestlé’s motto. The multinational company has never stopped from innovating across its various food industries to offer top of line products to its clientele. The coffee segment has always been a key market for Nestlé.

Nespresso is demonstrating its expertise and innovation bringing back highly exclusive Special Reserve Hawaii Kona coffee. Hawaii Kona coffee has earned a global reputation as one of the world’s most prestigious coffees, beloved by true connoisseurs. Nespresso’s coffee experts challenged themselves to bring Hawaii Kona’s remarkable sensory experience to its UAE consumers as a Special Reserve after a successful initial launch in the US back in 2012.

“In our endless quest for the most sought-after coffees around the world, we find small pockets of exceptional coffees, just enough in quantity to produce a Special Reserve that enables new dimensions in the journey of coffee knowledge and enjoyment,” commented Karsten Ranitzsch, Global Head of Coffee at Nestlé Nespresso SA. “Hawaii Kona is one of the world’s most notorious coffees for its exquisite taste but is so scarce that it can only be offered as a Special Reserve. It’s a true rare indulgence that every coffee lover should taste, if only once.”

Nespresso’s coffee experts carefully controlled the roasting and the grinding of this coffee to enhance its aromatic notes and finest flavors when consumers extract the cup.  Made of pure Hawaii Kona Arabica, it is infinitely rich and smooth, with a velvety body.  The intensity of this coffee lies not in its strength, but in its enduring and lingering taste. In place of bitterness coffee drinkers will find gentle fruity and well-rounded flavors that are light but lasting on the palate.

Born from one of the most beautiful islands in the world, Special Reserve Hawaii Kona’s rarity is a result of meticulous growth methods, traditional farming practices and the Nespresso mastery required to heighten its sensatory properties.  Grown on the left side of Hawaii’s Big Island on less than one thousand very small – often only five acre – family-run farms, approximately 40,000 bags are produced a year versus Colombia’s 14 million in 2019.  The region’s ideal microclimate with temperate weather, no frost, protective shade and lush volcanic soil, allows coffee bushes to develop slowly until they have created the perfect cherries which can then be hand-picked with meticulous care for the finest selection.  Only coffee grown in this very small region, as with Nespresso’s Special Reserve Hawaii Kona, can be labeled with the name.

Due to its small volume, the fragility of the crop and Nespresso’s meticulous approach, the quantity of coffee produced is very limited and precious. To preserve and best protect it, the cherries were stored with the kept parchment in Hawaii, and a second liner bag was added to protect and maintain the freshness of this delicate coffee.

A precious production, Nespresso’s Special Reserve Hawaii Kona also requires a very specific and delicate roasting method, carefully developed by Nespresso Experts, to highlight the coffee’s rare quality through its incomparable flavor and complexity. On Original, the coffee beans will go through a single batch medium roast and are ground to a medium size to create some intensity, while letting the exotic fruit notes prevail in the cup. On Vertuo, they are undergoing a split roast, with the first slightly lighter and longer and the second shorter and darker, for an extra punch. This combination helps preserve the natural fruity notes while creating body and intensity.

Due to the refinement of Special Reserve Hawaii Kona, it is best served as an espresso and tasted black to fully enjoy the sensorial experience it has to offer. Reflecting the preciousness of the coffee inside, the capsule is a pure silver color. The sleeve, in line with the capsule, is finished in a satin mat shade of silver and opens from the front in a coffer style.

Nespresso has also added the Nespresso Master Origins range. Complementing the existing blends in Nespresso’s Master Origins range, four new single origin blends have launched today including a limited edition coffee on the Original system; Master Origin Aged Sumatra. For Vertuo systems, Master Origin Aged Sumatra will also be available as a limited-edition coffee, along with new permanent single origin blends from Ethiopia, Costa Rica and Peru.

Inspired by the skills of some of the finest artisans, the Master Origins range gives coffee enthusiasts the chance to experience legendary tastes that would otherwise elude consumers.

Harnessing the local skills and knowledge from local coffee farmers in these regions, Nespresso Master Origins coffees are produced with meticulous care to deliver coffee excellence in each cup of Nespresso coffee. The distinctive aromatics of these coffees are not only linked to the countries of origin, but also to the specific ways of processing coffee by local farming communities. Each coffee source has allowed for Nespresso to work in partnership with local coffee farmers to produce these distinctive coffees to enjoy in the comfort of your own home.

As one of the first places in the world known for growing coffee on a large scale, Sumatra in Indonesia is renowned for the quality coffee beans it produces that offer a unique combination of body, depth and flavor.

High up around Gayo Mountain, in the Aceh province of the island of Sumatra, groups of skillful coffee farmers devote their expertise to the unusual process of giling basah. This process consists in removing the coffee cherry flesh and parchment while the beans inside are still wet, letting it breathe and dry more easily. Over the next 3 years the stored beans are left to moisten and dry with nature’s rhythms. These craftspeople take great care to continuously re-bag the coffee beans to ensure even ageing. The coupling of Indonesia’s giling basah method with the meticulous aging over several years develops a distinctive coffee profile.

Coffee lovers can expect a spicy woody profile with a velvety feel. Complex notes of cocoa and sweet caramel are also present throughout.

In the depths of Costa Rica, coffee farmers come together in a central mill to soak their coffee beans in hot spring waters. The pulped coffee beans then rest into a fermentation tank where the water cools and thoroughly washes the beans, creating a balanced and clean taste.

Coffee connoisseurs can expect a malty sweet cereal character of this craftsmen’s coffee.  Coffee farmers in Western Ethiopia excel in using the ‘dry method’ of coffee processing. Coffee cherries are carefully picked and spread on top of suspended beds under the intense tropical sun. The cherries are then hand-turned continually for up to four weeks to ensure the produce is dried evenly, creating a rich unique taste that can only be found in this region. This method has been used by Ethiopian farmers longer than anyone else.
